The effect of enzyme on the papermaking potential of OCC-recycled fibers has been investigatied by using different dosages of a commercial xylanase, applied under three sequences - without, prior to and after beating. The papermaking potential of pulp was evaluated by fiber characteristics, drainage behavior and strength properties of handsheets. The study demonstrated that xylanase enzyme can enhance the papermaking potential of OCC - recycled fibers by increasing drainage rate and bonding potential. The results strongly depend on the sequence of treatment, the highest improvement being obtained when the enzyme was applied before beating.
