Two recent multi-institutional Japanese studies used propensity score matching to compare the perioperative and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic versus open liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma or colorectal liver metastases. They found no difference in oncologic outcomes between the two groups, while the laparoscopic liver resection group had less blood loss and shorter hospital stay. © 2015 Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery.
