Formation of [eta(3)-CPh3)PdCl](2) via the reaction of Pd(COD)Cl-2 with the trityl radical

The diene compound Pd(COD)Cl-2 (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) reacts with a benzene solution of the trityl radical CPh3 to yield, surprisingly, trityl chloride and the eta(3)-benzylic compound [(eta(3)-CPh3)PdCl](2), previously synthesized via a more conventional route.
