Measurements of gaseous and particulate air pollution species are performed at the Schauinsland station since the mid nineties using the so-calledfilter pack method. Measurements at 4 additional stations of the German Federal Environmental Agency's air monitoring network started some time later. The analysis was performed within the scope of the EMEP-monitoring program. The following components ore determined: sulphur dioxide (SO2), sulphote (SO42-), the sum of ammonia and ammonium (Sigma [NH3 + NH4+]) as well as the sum of nitric acid and nitrate (Sigma [HNO3 + NO3-]). The air to be analysed is passed through a particle filter as a first step, followed by two impregnated cellulose filters for retaining the gaseous compounds. Automatic sampling is achieved using a SPF4 aerosol and gas sampling device. In a subsequent step in the laboratory the exposed samples are extracted, the determination of the compounds is done using ion chromatography and flow injection analysis. For sulphur dioxide a good correlation was found between the filter pack method and a new continuous SO2-analyzer. The yearly averages of SO2 ranged from 1.1 to 2.7 mu g/m(3) in the year 2002. For sulphate, the yearly averages varied between 0.6 mu g S/m(3) at the Schouinstand station and 1.0 resp. 1.1 mu gS/m(3) at the other stations. The sum of (NH3 + NH4+) ranged from 1.1 to 2.2 mu gN/m(3), being nearly twice as high as the sum of (HNO3 + NO3).
