Preparation and Characterization of Silica-Titania Optical Films Codoped with Er3+ and SnO2 Nanocrystals

Sol-gel derived 90%SiO2-10%TiO2 optical films (refractive index 1.50, film thickness 2.78 mu m) codoped with Er3+ and SnO2 nanoparticles were prepared. The crystalline phases, shapes and sizes of nanocrystals in the sintered sol-gels were investigated by X-ray diffraction and TEM. Rutile-type structured SnO2 nanocrystals (4 nm in size) were formed. FTIR spectra of the films were discussed. Fluorescence measurements of Er3+ in slab waveguides were performed in lightwave-guiding configuration by prism-coupling, to discern the emission of Er3+ film and nanoparticles environments, Er3+ photo-luminescence intensity was enhanced 10 times due to SnO2 nanoparticles in the film.
