Cutting-edge technology is helping to detect, monitor, and reduce erosion in the harsh desert environment of southeast Arizona. The purpose of the Army's Integrated Training Area Management program is to integrate military training requirements with sound natural resource management. Fort Huachuca's ITAM program has been testing a new video mapping system that takes video images of erosion problems. The images can then be accurately plotted and viewed on a computer-generated map. Combining this new technology with a satellite-based positioning system and state-of-the-art mapping software program, the ITAM program is exploring new ways to help protect the environment while helping to support and improve soldier training on the installation.
