Assessment of mitral regurgitation by stress echocardiography

Assessment of mitral regurgitation by stress echocardiography Doppler echocardiography has played an important role for the assessment of mitral regurgitation (MR). It allows the identification of the etiology and mechanism, the quantification of the MR by estimation of the volume and the area of the regurgitation orifice as well as the hemodynamic consequences on the left ventricle and the pulmonary circulation. Until recently, this technique has not been used to study the dynamic changes of MR. Stress echocardiography now enables the quantification of these changes.
