Neutron studies of the dynamics of biological water

摘要
Energy-resolving neutron scattering techniques provide spatiotemporal information on biomolecular hydration processes in a parameter domain covering the functionally important transition from diffusive to vibrational processes. The data obtained relate closely to current computer simulations of the molecular dynamics of partially and fully hydrated proteins and biopolymers. The scope of experimental work on water sorbed by globular proteins and on water in polysaccharide gels is outlined. Results on representative systems in different hydration regimes are discussed: a slightly hydrated, in vivo deuterated protein (C-phycocyanin), and two highly hydrated polysaccharide gels (agarose and hyaluronate).
