摘要
Setaria italica is commonly known as Foxtail millet (Korralu in Telugu). It belongs to the millet family consisting of high fiber content along with many mineral, vitamins, essential aminoacids, proteins, gluten free and very less quantity of carbohydrates. Due to enormous advantages and was less explored this millet was choosen for the study of antihyperlipidemic activity. To investigate the anti-hyperlipidemic activity of hydroalcoholic extract of seed and husk of Setaria italica in aetherogenic diet induced hyperlipidemic rats. Thehydroalcoholic extract of Setaria italica seeds and husk were evaluated for antihyperlipidemic activity in atherogenic diet induced hyperlipidemic rats. The study was performed by comparing the results with that of a standard drug atorvastatin (10mg/kg body wt). The study results were expressed as mean +/- S.E and the data was analysed by using one way analysis (ANOVA). Values with P < 0.05 were considered as significant. Oral administration of 500mg/kg body wt of hydroalcoholic extract of Setaria italica showed significant reduction in the serum levels of low density lipoproteins (LDL), triglcerides (TG), total cholesterol and an increase in high density lipoproteins (HDL) than the standard control. The Hydroalcoholic extract of seed possess significant activity than hydroalcoholic extract of husk of Setaria italica. The hydroalcoholic seed extract of Setaria italica produced promising results the millets have to be consumed as a diet as it immensely controls the serum cholesterol levels which plays a vital role in control of cardiovascular diseases.
