摘要：

This paper deals with segmentation and its important role in process of region-oriented image approximation. We propose new segmentation method based on Gabor filters, which is used for searching optimal regions for approximation. Selecting suitable segments is crucial for quality of compressed image especially for low bit rates. For reaching interesting results we use DCT II as orthogonal transform and efficient polygonal approximation of segments.
