Oxidation of ethylbenzene in the presence of the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide

摘要
Liquid phase oxidation of ethylbenzene by molecular oxygen in the presence of commercial 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) was investigated at 60degreesC. EPR measurements revealed that at these conditions the oxidation of ethylbenzene is induced by commercial DMPO, the latter acting both as,a spin trap and an initiator. Computer simulation and EPR-spectrum registered that if ethylbenzene is exchanged into chlorobenzene the initiation is due to radicals produced from impurities present in the commercial DMPO.
