Recent advances in the synthesis of metal sulfides with controlled architecture, exemplified by microporous and mesostructured materials, intercalates, nanowires, and nanotubes are described. These illustrate a paradigm shift from traditional solid-state methods to rational, directed assembly of materials with hierarchical design. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
