Structural composites for bodyshells of passenger rail vehicles

This paper reviews the state-of-the-art with respect to the use of composites as structural materials for passenger vehicle bodyshells. A brief account of the evolution of the modem bodyshell is given, together with an overview of its engineering requirements and the potential benefits afforded by the use of composite materials. The paper then goes on to discuss the relative merits of the various resins, fibres and moulding techniques that are available to the designer.
