摘要：

The world is witnessing a revolution, a revolution in the scholarly world. This revolution or movement is in reply to the crisis prevailing in the scholarly communication. The exponential price rise in the journals and other scholarly documents has decreased the purchasing power of libraries and of common man. The solution lies in Open Access which deals with making the documents available free from any kind of restriction including financial crisis. Institutional repositories (IRs) are strong enablers of Open Access (OA). This paper presents the overview of the scholarly communication and the conceptual background of the IRs which institutions specially higher education institutions (HEIs) can adopt and contribute in the OA movement thus working in the direction of betterment of the society and transforming it into a unbiased knowledge society.
