Agent-based university Intranet and information system as a basis for distance education and open learning

Advanced networking services, such as Intranet/Internet services can provide a basis for distance education and learning. This distributed education and learning environment should provide the key to delivering immersion multimedia learning materials and asynchronous or synchronous conversations among students and instructors (professors). At our University we have built a model of "Virtual University" which represents this enriched educational environment. In this paper, we will present a structure of a multiagent University information System (UIS) and the distributed communication among different processes using Intranet/Internet tools (services). In the first phase, we have built as an example, an experimental system called MATHEIS - MATHematical Electronic Interactive System. It offers on-line services for distance learning in Mathematics and Informatics and could be used in Engineering as well. The system is available in Republic of Macedonia but there is no limits to be used by neighboring countries.
