Energy saving technologies for mobile networks are becoming important because of increasing demand in mobile traffic. Recently, energy-efficient architectures such as heterogeneous deployment and centralized BBUs in one site room (C-BBU) have drawn more and more attention. By taking advantages of employing closer transmitting and receiving antenna to users, both heterogeneous deployment and C-BBU are shown energy efficient, while the later one has additional advantage in saving site equipment such as air-conditioner. The energy efficiency (EE) of mobile network is evaluated according to power modeling of equipment in the network. For more realistic evaluation, a power model including major components contributing to power consumption is essential. In this paper, EE for different deployment architectures is evaluated with power model for base station (BS) site. In addition to power consumption of BSs, air-conditioner and power system, power consumption of transmission equipment are explicitly considered with different backhaul technologies. The evaluation results show how subsidiary equipment in BS site affects the EE of radio access networks (RAN). Not like that in homogeneous deployment, it is shown that power consumption of transmission equipment is obvious and cannot be ignored in power model for energy efficiency evaluation in heterogeneous deployment.
