Gustatory rhinitis is characterized by watery rhinorrhea, which only occurs during food intake and is not accompanied by itching, sneezing or a stuffy nose. It belongs to the non-allergic, non-inflammatory group of rhinitis. Typically, it worsens with the intake of hot or spicy food. The diagnosis is based on patients history and exclusion of other types of non-allergic rhinitis. The simplest treatment option, avoiding the triggers, is often not sufficient. The intranasal application of capsaicin or ipratropium bromide represent possible treatment approaches. As a last resort, vidian nerve neurectomy can be a treatment option.
