Hematologic complications of rheumatic disease therapies

Rheumatic disease therapies have expanded to include many cytotoxic and immunosuppressive agents in addition to corticosteroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The use of more aggressive therapeutic interventions may expose patients to potential Life-threatening toxicities. This article reviews the potential cytopenias and malignant hematologic neoplasms associated with the use of some of these therapies. The use of recombinant growth factors is also discussed.
