Apple Computer Inc's latest electronic bus, FireWire, also defined as IEEE 1394 is making its presence felt in the consumer electronics industry. The bus supports data rates up to 400 Mb/s and its protocol support real-time audio and video transmission and has multiple channels for simultaneous communication with several devices. Software and hardware configurations are essential to 1394 implementation as well as proper functioning of its physical, link and transaction layers. Although only the personal computer (PC) video editing has reached the market, several applications are seen to follow and Sony and the rest of the consumer electronics companies are directing their efforts to these developments.
