Getting the Best from Chlorine Dioxide Bleaching

Chlorine dioxide has become the universal bleaching agent for kraft pulp. Based on the known mechanisms of lignin oxidation by ClO2 it was shown in previous work that more than 50% of the ClO2 applied in conventional elemental chlorine free (ECF) sequences is consumed in reactions which do not participate in the bleaching process. It is proposed that one of these reactions can be the oxidation of muconic acid derivatives, which are the primary lignin oxidation products. This overconsumption may be minimized by reducing the chlorine multiple in the first D stage or by removing the muconic acid derivatives when present to a substantial extent. A new strategy of ClO2 application in ECF bleaching is proposed, to apply the latter approach. At? amount of 30% ClO2 can be saved in the ECF bleaching of a softwood kraft pulp. However, this new strategy requires more caustic soda and the addition of one or two supplementary towers.
