The interest of secondary school students in science and engineering was investigated in the Netherlands. The outcome of this study shows that the technical universities are currently not very attractive for a large group of young people. Together with the requirements for the engineer of the future, a new bachelor structure was developed at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). This new set-up provides a solid base in engineering, broadening with social and management subjects and provides the flexibility for the student to (partly) design his own study by means of electives. In this way we expect to educate more (microwave) engineers of the future.
