Self-organized calcite hierarchical structures are obtained by a template- and surfactant-free approach in a single step using biuret as carbonate source precursors in a solvothetmal system. The calcite crystals exhibit two kinds of patterns, one of which is composed of small rhombohedron subunits with a mean scale of 5-10 mu m. A possible formation mechanism is proposed.
