Reliable and Energy-Efficient Transmission on the Internet-of-Video-Things

Due to the rapid development of smart homes, smart grid, and intelligent transportation, Internet-of-VideoThings (IoVT) have become increasingly important. IoVT is considered as a part of Internet-of-Things that can effectively deal with large volumes of data, such as image and video. In IoVT, reliable and energy-efficient transmission is extremely important. The reliability guarantees all data are properly transferred in the network, while the energy efficiency allows a large amount of data to be processed at low power consumption. In this paper, a hardware platform based on Raspberry Pi Zero (RPZ) is proposed. RPZ is exploited due to its integrated H. 264 hardware encoder/decoder. A source node is composed of a RPZ, a camera, and an Atmel RF, whereas a sink node excludes the camera. The input is a 640x480@30fps video, and the output is the 300-Kbps H. 264 encoded bit stream. Based on various experiments, we concluded that data were properly transferred and the energy per bit was approximately 6.4 nJ/bit.
