The physicochemical and electrochemical behavior of lithium oxide in the equimolar NaCl-KCl melt

Solubility of lithium oxide in the equimolar NaCl-KCl melt was determined over the temperature interval from 973 to 1123 K. The formation-dissociation reaction of lithium carbonate in this electrolyte was analyzed. Thermodynamic functions characterizing these processes were calculated. The activity coefficients in solutions of lithium oxide and lithium carbonate Evert estimated. The anodic process at a glassy carbon electrode in the said oxide-chloride electrolyte was studied using the linear voltammetry method. The electrode process was found to proceed in stages and irreversibly. Electrochemical and diffusion parameters characterizing the electrode process were evaluated. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
