Syllabuses for teaching science and technology include theoretical classes, exercises, problem solving, and learning through experiments in the laboratory. Such lab-based practice centres on the application of theory explained in lectures to specific real-world cases. Traditionally, lab experiments consist of a more or less simple experimental setup that puts to use students' skills and some of the theory taught in lectures. In order to carry out the experiment, the teacher prepares a guide beforehand, which describes in detail all the steps to be taken to reach the desired end result. In contrast to such a programmed and directed system, experiments can be done in an alternative way, in which the learner is provided with the theoretical basis and the tools needed to reach the desired result and the learning process becomes more personal, innovative and creative.
