Complexes of nickel(II), palladium(II) and platinum(II) with 2,6-bis(mercaptomethyl)pyridine

2,6-Bis (mercaptomethyl)pyridine (H(2)L) and its binuclear nickel(II), palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes, containing the dianion as a bridging ligand, were prepared and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic data. Square-planar geometries are proposed for these divalent metal complexes. Cyclic voltammetry of Ni(2)L(2) in DMSO shows a reversible one-electron reduction wave at -1.48 V vs a Ag/AgBF4 reference electrode. Quantitative reduction of this complex by controlled potential electrolysis at -1.80 V yielded the corresponding Ni-I product as shown by ESR spectroscopy. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
