Mesoporous SBA-15 silica graft sulfate zirconia materials via sol-gel method were investigated. SAXRD, XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption and HRTEM were used to characterize the properties of this acid catalysts. SAXRD and XRD characterizations revealed that SO42-/ZrO2-SBA-15 catalysts with monolayer coverage can be obtained using this grafting technique. N-2 adsorption-desorption exhibits improved thermal stability. HRTEM presents that the ordered mesostructure of the mesoporous material is preserved at all calcination temperatures. The SO42-/ZrO2-SBA-15-500 catalyst showed the highest activity in the condensation between toluene and formaldehyde. The conversion of formaldehyde reached 35.7%.
