摘要
An early goal of the RHIC experiments was to have. common tools for event characterization so that results can be compared under similar conditions. To that end, the experiments are equipped with Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDC), which measure neutral fragments at beam rapidity. The ZDC's are used for luminosity measurement and as a minimum bias event trigger. We discuss the detector design and performance during the year 2000 RHIC run. Their role in determining event centrality in an experiment independent way will be evaluated.
