High intensity beams for heavy ion driven inertial fusion by multiturn stacking

摘要
A European study group presently is investigating the possibility and the layout of a heavy ion driven fusion ignition facility (HIDIF). We present this scenario and perform PIC simulations of multiturn stacking in the accumulator rings. By stacking twenty 400mA beams of Bi-209(1+) ions the current is increased to about 8A with particle losses of about 5% and an increase of emittance by a factor of 10.
