On the reinforcing effect of multiwall carbon nanotubes in a natural rubber-based carbon black filled rubber compound

Multiwall carbon natotubes (MWCNTs) were studied as reinforcing filler in a natural rubber based formulation as partial replacement of carbon black [1]. The reinforcing effect exerted by the addition of MWCNTs was dramatic. Using the Enstein-Gold-Guth equation the reinforcement has been evaluated quantitatively and it has been shown that it derives from the anisotropy factor f (or shape factor) of MWCNTs used in the present work. In fact f reaches the value of 52.5, one order of magnitude higher than a reinforcing carbon black where the shape factor f is similar to 6.
