摘要
Children with low calcium intake are at greater risk for increased body fat1 and place themselves at risk for osteoporosis later in life.2 Although the recommended adequate calcium intake for children and adolescents between the ages of 9 and 18 years is 1300 mg,3 current research indicates that calcium intake in school-age children is below the recommended adequate intake.4 Between 44% and 87% of school-aged boys and girls do not meet their recommended intake for calcium.4 Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that dairy intake decreases throughout childhood and adolescence.5 In response to this critical child health issue, a 10-week calcium nutrition and physical activity pilot intervention program was designed, with the goal of increasing the calcium intake of the school-aged children who participated in the program. © 2006 SOCIETY FOR NUTRITION EDUCATION.
