Sintering Behavior of MgAl2O4 Spinel Powders Prepared by Solid State Reaction at Low Temperature

MgAl2O4 spinel powders were synthesized via solid state reaction at low temperature using basic aluminum acetate and magnesium nitrate as starting materials and citric acid as complexing agent. The effects of calcination temperatures of MgAl2O4 precursor on spinel crystal structure and sinterability were investigated. The results indicate that MgAl2O4 spinel with cation defect begins to form at 700 degrees C and pure-ordered spinel phase can be obtained at higher calcination temperature. The spinel powder calcined at 800 degrees C shows best sinterability, and the spinel ceramic with 98% relative density can be obtained after sintering at 1600 degrees C.
