Widespread introduction of mobile location based services is delayed by the lack of accurate and cost efficient location technology. Initial demand does not justify introduction of expensive high-accuraccy solutions, while cost efficient and easily introducable technologies such as Cell ID lacks precision. We propose improved algorithm for Cell ID based location systems that allows to significantly improve positioning accuraccy. Algorithm uses repetitive measurements of conventional Cell ID positioning algorithm, filters results using fading filter that takes into account knowledge of network configuration and mobile channel fading characteristics and applies velocity filter in case of moving target tracking. Proposed algorithm reduces positioning error in urban environment 2-3 times depending on environment.
