The possible selves of international students and their cross-cultural adjustment in Canada

摘要
We assessed 93 international students' reports of their expected and feared possible selves in terms of their thematic content and configuration, and examined the relations between possible selves and cultural adjustment in Canada. The results showed that international students mostly envisioned possible selves in career, education, intrapersonal, and interpersonal domains, and reported more balanced configurations than matched configurations of possible selves. Balanced possible selves in the educational domain were associated with better psychological well-being, but balanced selves in the intrapersonal domains were linked with more frequent sociocultural difficulties. The findings suggest that the content of international students' possible selves reflects not only their academic-focused and career-inspired sojourn, but also their intercultural experiences with various ethnic groups in the Canadian multicultural society. As well, they speak to the motivational significance of possible selves, particularly the balanced possible selves, for supporting international students' motivation to pursue an international education and for facilitating a successful cross-cultural sojourn. Nous avons evalue les rapports de 93 etudiants internationaux portant sur leurs sois possibles attendus et craints en termes de leur contenu thematique et de leur configuration. Nous avons aussi examine les relations entre les sois possibles et leur adaptation culturelle au Canada. Les resultats ont montre que les etudiants internationaux concevaient surtout des sois possibles dans les domaines de la carriere, de l'education, de l'intrapersonnel et de l'interpersonnel et ils rapportaient plus de sois possibles avec configurations equilibrees qu'avec configurations assorties. Les sois possibles equilibres dans le domaine de l'education etaient associes a un meilleur bien-etre psychologique, mais les sois equilibres dans les domaines intrapersonnels etaient lies a des problemes socioculturels plus frequents. Les resultats suggerent que le contenu des sois possibles des etudiants internationaux refletent non seulement un sejour centre sur leur preoccupations academiques et leur souci de carriere, mais aussi leurs experiences interculturelles avec divers groupes ethniques de la societe canadienne multiculturelle. Aussi, ces resultats sont revelateurs a propos de la signification motivationnelle des sois possibles, en particulier des sois possibles equilibres, pour maintenir la motivation des etudiants internationaux a poursuivre une education internationale et pour faciliter un sejour interculturel reussi. Se evaluaron los informes de 93 alumnos internacionales respecto de las expectativas y temores en sus posibles autoidentidades en terminos de contenido y configuracion tematica, y se examino las relaciones entre posibles autoidentidades y la adaptacion cultural en Canada. Los resultados mostraron que donde mas se podian imaginar a si mismos en distintos ambitos los alumnos internacionales fue en la profesion, la educacion, los ambitos intra e interpersonales, y que mostraron configuraciones mas equilibradas que las configuraciones apareadas de sus posibles autoidentidades. Las autoidentidades posibles equilibradas en el ambito educacional estuvieron asociadas con un mejor bienestar psicologico, pero las autoidentidades equilibradas en los ambitos intrapersonales estuvieron ligadas a dificultades socioculturales mas frecuentes. Los hallazgos indican que el contenido de las autoidentidades posibles en los alumnos internacionales reflejan no solamente su estadia centrada en el estudio y profesion, sino tambien sus experiencias interculturales con los diversos grupos etnicos de la sociedad multicultural canadiense. Al mismo tiempo, se hace referencia al significado motivacional de las posibles autoidentidades, en particular a las autoidentidades posibles equilibradas, a la hora de apoyar la motivacion de los alumnos internacionales de obtener una educacion internacional y facilitar una estadia transcultural exitosa.
