Comparative killing kinetic of cloxacillin alone and in combination on Staphylococcus aureus

Bactericidal activity against five methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus strains was observed with cloxacillin, oxacillin, gentamicin and pefloxacin, at antibiotic concentrations compatible those observed in vivo. Erythromycin, pristinamycin and fusidic acid showed no bactericidal activity. At concentrations obtained after oral administration, cloxacillin was the only penicillin M to kill the 2 beta-lactamase-hyperproducing strains in 6 h. Combination of cloxacillin with gentamicin or pefloxacin did not result in faster killing. Addition of fusidic acid to cloxacillin reduced the bactericidal activity of the latter.
