摘要
This paper focuses on the controversial behavior of the U.S. Government during the attempted coup d'etat in Spain on 23 February 1981. The inappropriate statement made by the Secretary of State Haig, who referred to the assault as an "internal matter", gave rise to all kind of sensationalist hypothesis. The exploration of the messages sent by the U.S. Embassy in Madrid during those difficult hours for the young Spanish democracy seems to dismiss any direct implication of the Reagan Administration in the conspiracy. This essay examines as well the relations between Spain and the United States on that period.
