Integrated antimicrobial and shape memory zwitterionic copolymers

摘要
This paper reports novel antimicrobial properties and shape memory properties of zwitterionic copolymers synthesized with 3-dimethyl(methacyloyloxyethyl) ammonium propane sulfonate (DMAPS) and acrylic acid (AA). The results demonstrate that the DMAPS-co-AA copolymer successfully integrates the antimicrobial properties and shape memory properties. The zwitterionic copolymer has good antimicrobial activity with bacteriostasis mechanism. Though the minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of DMAPS-co-AA copolymer is much higher, zwitterionic copolymer is a good candidate of environmental friendly antimicrobial agent due to its nontoxic and biocompatibility. The shape memory properties of zwitterionic copolymer further encourage them many smart biomedical applications, such as suture and drug release.
