Photoactivity of p-Type α-Fe2O3 Induced by Anionic/Cationic Codoping of N and Zn

N,Zn-codoped Fe2O3, a p-type alpha-Fe2O3 with a band gap of 2.0 eV, was developed by cosputtering of Fe2O3 and ZnO in a plasma mixture of N-2 and Ar, followed by post-annealing. Photoelectrochemical measurement revealed that N, Zn-Fe2O3 exhibits a typical cathodic photocurrent originating from the p-type conduction. It also showed a very high photocurrent, most likely originating from a higher concentration of acceptors than those of N- and Zn-Fe2O3. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy suggested that N and Zn ions could reside at the nearest neighbor to stabilize the p-type character. N, Zn-Fe2O3 could be promising in photoenergy conversion when combined with appropriate co-catalysts. (C) 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics
