A "soften-and-squash" fabrication technique has been demonstrated to controllably deform optical microspheres and form microdiscus resonators with improved surface quality. The characteristic shape of the microdiscus results in superior mode control, and the annealing involved in the fabrication process leads to quality factors (Q) exceeding 10(5), which is about two orders of magnitude higher than the initial microspheres.
