Self-assembled cylindrical lipid tubules with a birefringent core

摘要
The fabrication of optical anisotropic fibers with straight, zigzag, and loop shapes by filling the hollow core of cylindrical DC PC tubules with nematic liquid crystals through capillary action was investigated. An ordered array of optical anisotropic fibers was formed on substrates by inserting the 5CB liquid crystals into the parallel aligned tubules produced by microfluidic networks. Nematic liquid crystals confined to cylindrical cavities has been extensively studied because of their applications in electrooptic devices. The results show that lipid tubules with a birefringent liquid-crystal core could have potential applications in sensors, photonic devices, and optical communications.
