Revisiting the analysis methods for pressure fluctuation signals measured in fluidized beds

This work compares time, frequency and state-space analyses of pressure measurements from fluidized beds. The experiments were carried out in a circulating fluidized bed rig, operated under ambient conditions and in different fluidization regimes. Three analysis methods that were applied in recent papers are discussed. It is shown that the interpretation of results from the Hurst analysis in terms of long-term correlations is questionable. We investigate the use of the frequency response analysis (Bode plots) to describe a fluidized bed as a linear input-output model. We claim that the Kolmogorov entropy - resulting from chaos analysis - is not a proper measure for the predictability of fluidized bed signals. The average cycle frequency - which shows a linear relationship with the Kolmogorov entropy - is a simpler measure to quantify the main time-scale.
