Influence of Hydroelectric Power Plant Lipno Operation on Power Quality in Connection with The Traction Consumption

Electric traction is one of the biggest appliances in power network and its influences on sup-ply network are significant. Important influences of AC railway traction on supply network are current asymmetry (it is 1phase appliance) and non-sinusoidal current consumption. Consequently it causes voltage asymmetry and voltage harmonic distortion. Magnitude of voltage asymmetry and harmonic distortion is proportional to network impedance in the coupling point. Both of these phenomena are undesirable and existing legislation sets limits for both unbalance and harmonic distortion. The paper is based on measurements carried out in 2011 in traction transformer substation Velesin and simultaneously in substations at the beginning and end of the 110kV line that feeds the transformer substation. One end of this line is in a hydroelectric power plant Lipno. This power plant has two generators 60 MW and is used as an peak source, it is in operation only a few hours a day. When it is in operation (generators are connected to the network), impedance in coupling point is lower then when it is not in operation. It affects the magnitude of the voltage asymmetry caused by traction consumption in Velesin.
