Comparative study of depressed and non-depressed schizophrenic patients.

Depression increases the risk of relapses and is related with a poor treatment response. chronicity and functional impairment in schizophrenic patients; it is associated with outcome variables. Objective: To determine the presence of depression in schizophrenia and its association with clinical outcome variables. Method: We include 59 schizophrenic patients. Diagnosis was made with the CIDI Clinical evaluation was performed with the PANSS and Calgary Depression Scale. Results: Depression was observed in 62.7% of the patients and was associated with psychotic symptoms, single status and the use of biperiden. Conclusion: Depression is common in schizophrenia and is associated with clinical variables. The Calgary Scale is useful for detecting depression.
