PEROXIDE BLEACHING OPTIMIZATION PROGRAM : PORT HAWKESBURY PAPER MILL

The Port Hawkesbury Paper mill, a world-class maker of supercalendered papers, was restarted in October 2012 by Pacific West Commercial Corp. The mill recognized immediately that it needed to improve its economics to be competitive. Among other initiatives, Port Hawkesbury Paper worked with their H2O2 supplier to determine options to decrease the cost of pulp brightening. Port Hawkesbury Paper is a mechanical pulp mill, and pulp brightening is a major cost. The authors worked to investigate possibilities for decreasing cost or improving brightening efficiency. This was done as a three-phase program: a laboratory study to examine possibilities, followed by mill trials to confirm potential savings, and lastly full implementation of the new program.
