摘要
By discussing the variable foot, the symbolic icons and the audio-visual integration in William Carlos William's poetry, this paper aims to explicate the uncertain immanence embodied in the unique presentation of "either this or that" and "neither this nor that" in Williams' poems, and to explore how Williams, as a spiritual leader of the postmodern poetry that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s in America, incorporated the external physical universe and the internal mental world into the systems of symbols and language in his poetry, and how he, with his own example, guided people to free themselves from the imprisonment of language through deconstruction-reconstruction, so that the human mind, by constantly increasing the ability to transcribe itself with the help of symbols, can adapt to and transform reality and achieve the perfect combination of natural life and art.
