The calculation method for flexible and semi-rigid road pavements standardized in Romania was brought into force in 2001, in the same time with the replacement of the semi-theoretical method adopted in 1977 (based on the adaptation of the Ivanov method to the conditions in Romania) with a theoretical method based on the calculation of the state of tensions and strains in the adequately modeled road pavement. In the period since the method came into force and up to the present, the authors have found a series of elements to be taken into account in improving the calculation conditions used in the present dimensioning method. Firstly, it is about the improvement of the calculation program (at present the modeling of the resistance structure is allowed in maximum five layers, and it is considered that they work together perfectly in all cases), and secondly, it is about correcting the strain characteristics of the materials in the road layers implied by the method, with the help of the results obtained by different researching teams during the last ten years and the new types of materials used in the Romanian road section. To this end, we can mention that the calculation method does not stipulate strain characteristics for the road materials obtained through in situ recycling with bituminous emulsion, cement, foamed bitumen or mixed binders, while this type of technology has known a continuous development lately. Also, in the field of bituminous layers an ever larger use of asphalt mixtures with modified bitumen or stabilized with fibers is noticed, but their strain characteristics are not specified in the calculation method.
