We introduce the notion of an essential map for DKT, P-1-compact, weakly DKT, and weakly closed maps. The ideas involved are elementary and rely on Urysohn's Lemma and the "appropriate" Schauder fixed-point theorem for the maps involved. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
