摘要：

The essay expands upon the interdependence between conduct manuals (basically addressed to the middle class) and the development of urban, middle class identities. This thesis is illustrated by a survey of a fewessential conduct manuals which came out in New York City in the latter half of the nineteenth century. They contributed to moulding a typically American, middle class identity.
