A conceptual distributed hydrological model has been developed in order to assess precipitations, evapotranspirations, aquifer recharges and river discharges on a monthly scale in large basins. This model has been built using a raster Geographical Information System (GIS) which has been integrated into the Hydrological Information System (SIMPA) of the Center for Hydrographic Studies of CEDEX (Spain). The model works in natural conditions, recreating the main processes of the hydrological cycle, by establishing the water balances and transfer laws in each cell into which the basin is discretized. The model has been applied to the Guadiana River Basin (Spain), about 60,000 Km2. The area includes the 179 tributaries of the River Guadiana and their catchment areas.
