Psychometric Properties of the Family Communication Scale

Given the growing transcultural interest shown in the Circumplex Model, and considering the need for adapted versions of its scales, the present study analyzes the psychometric properties of the Family Communication Scale (Olson & Barnes, 2010) in the Uruguayan population. The sample was composed of 518 families. We administered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Family Communication Scale and FACES IV scales. Results from the confirmatory factor analysis showed the unidimensionality of the scale, presenting an adequate index of reliability. Moreover, the correlations with FACES W scales agreed with theoretically based expectations, with the exception of the Enmeshment and Rigid scales. We conclude that the Family Communication Scale presents adequate psychometric properties that make it a valid and reliable technique for the assessment of communication in Uruguayan families.
